Hi, I'm Whitney. Welcome to Half Painted.
I spent eight years as a residential interior designer in Nashville, Tennessee. I helped over forty families choose fabrics, colors, and furniture for their homes. I had fabric certifications, color theory training, and a lot of opinions about sofa placement.
Then I bought my own house.
And discovered that decorating with a real budget, a real family, and real life happening in every room is a completely different thing. My husband Derek (middle school music teacher, trumpet player, very patient about paint swatches taped to walls) and my daughter Mia (age four, source of crayon marks and the reason every fabric in our house has to be stain-resistant) don't care about design theory. They care about whether the couch is comfortable and where the snacks are.
Half Painted is the blog I needed back when I was a designer — and the blog I desperately need right now, in the middle of my own perpetually-in-progress home.
What You'll Find Here
Room makeovers done on real budgets, with real prices listed. Not "budget" meaning "only $5,000."
Thrift flips — I've been known to stop for anything with a "FREE" sign on the curb. I know every Goodwill within thirty miles.
DIY projects you can actually do with kids underfoot or a limited weekend.
Gardening for people who kill plants but keep trying anyway. My balcony container garden runs on guilt and hope.
Honest advice about what's worth spending money on and what absolutely isn't.
What You Won't Find
Pinterest-perfect rooms. Styled-to-death photos. Product recommendations from brands I've never used. Advice that assumes you have a designer's budget or a spotless house. Anything labeled "aspirational."
The Half Painted Philosophy
Most home content online falls into two camps: glossy magazine rooms that don't feel lived in, or super-basic beginner guides that don't go deep enough.
Half Painted lives in the middle. I know what I'm doing. I've trained for this. And I still mess up constantly — paint the living room three times before it's right, buy a sofa color I argue with myself about, leave my daughter's wall sticker up for a full month because I can't decide whether to fight that battle.
I share it all. The wins, the face-palms, and the exact dollar amounts.
A home is never finished. That's the whole point.
That's what I believe. That's why this site is called Half Painted. Not because I'm lazy — because I finally realized that "in progress" is the permanent condition of a home that's actually lived in. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Where Else to Find Me
When I'm not blogging or repainting something for the third time, I'm usually at a thrift store, on my balcony apologizing to a fern, or pretending to fold laundry while reading a suspense novel. You can also find me here:
